Waiclay National Ceramics Award 2017

Waiclay was established in 2001 at a national convention in the Waikato which included a national ceramic exhibition at Waikato Museum. Waiclay has continued this special relationship with Waikato Museum by holding a national exhibition at the Museum every two years.

The Waiclay team and Waikato Museum works together as a partnership to develop a ceramic exhibition that is now considered to be one of the best in New Zealand.

  • 22 September - Closing date for entries
  • 22 October - Artists notified
  • 30 October - 1 November - Works to be received at Waikato Museum
  • 17 November - Exhibition opening night - winners announced

Portage Ceramic Awards 2017

Entries are now open for the Portage Ceramic Awards 2017, closing on Monday 7th August at 4pm. Established in 2001 and administered by Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery with support from The Trusts Community Foundation, The Portage Ceramic Awards is Aotearoa's best-known barometer for developments in the field of ceramics.

Key Dates

Entries close - on 7 August 2017
Finalists announced - 28 October 2017
Awards evening - on 9 November 2017
Exhibition - at Te Uru from 10 November 2017 – 4 February 2018

The Awards

The premier Portage Ceramic Award carries a prize of $15,000. Up to three merit awards totaling $3000 are also on offer. This year’s prize selection includes a residency at Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Centre in Denmark.

The overall winner, Guldagergaard residency winner and up to three merit award winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held at Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery in Titirangi, West Auckland on 9 November 2017.

The Selection Process

The selection of works for the 2017 Portage Ceramic Awards is a two-stage process. Up to 60 works will be selected by the judge from submitted images. Those artists will be invited to send their works to Te Uru for the final selection where the judge will view and select the exhibiting works and award winners.

Registered as an incorporated society in 1965 by an enthusiastic group of potters in Wellington, New Zealand, NZ Potters (Inc.) has grown to become a significant international voice in New Zealand ceramics. The affiliation of about three dozen independent pottery clubs throughout New Zealand together with a number of corporate businesses greatly increases its effective membership. We are a national, not-for-profit organisation representing the interests of practising potters and ceramicists, students of ceramics and all those interested in New Zealand ceramics. We actively support and promote quality, and we encourage and support specialist ceramics education nationally.
